Huntington Beach Union High School District Educators Association represents teachers and specialists in the cities of Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, and Westminster, working in comprehensive high schools, continuation and alternative education high schools, and adult school. We are the teachers, nurses, and educators of our students and your community.

In a time with so much uncertainty and hurt feelings between the union and the district, it is important that members stick together and stand not only in solidarity but in praise for each other. This column is one attempt at such a stand:  It will be a monthly opportunity for members to raise each other up, to give public accolades for the extraordinary accomplishments made in the classroom and on school sites across the district, not just for students but for each other.

Who to recommend? You can recommend anyone.

District teacher of the year, Thao-Ly Nguyen, helping a student.

You can go for the more obvious, but not any less deserving, recommendations like our district teachers of the year: Thao Nguyen of Westminster HS and Gavin Ehlers of Marina HS. Thao-Ly Nguyen has been working at WHS for 15 years.  She is an outstanding teacher dedicated to the advancement of the Vietnamese language and culture at the school.  Colleagues and student respect and admire her for her qualities as a teacher and as a person. They are very proud of her achievements.  Gavin loves Oreos, (almost to the point of needing an intervention) and is really helpful to students when they don’t understand something. He allows the students to be heard by asking them to justify their choice of “incorrect” test answers which not only allows them to be heard but also forces him to reflect on his own teaching practices.  Students would say his class is fun and interesting and that he obviously cares for their well-being.

No matter who you would like to nominate we want to recognize members.  They can make big contributions to the whole district or make the small differences daily on their site and within their department. All teachers matter and we need to make it known that they are being seen.

We are proud members of the California Teachers Association (CTA) and the National Educators Association (NEA). We enjoy engaging with our members, students, neighbors, and communities to improve education and access to free, quality public education for all of our students in every community.
